Version 1 of the Civic Media app serves a very simple purpose: to connect the audience to their favorite radio station without having to use the radio. It features a player that also enables the listener to call or text the station from the app. This feature helped increase audience engagement by close to 1200% from the moment it was launched.

Leadership
Took the project from 0-to-1 as a lone designer during a time when the network had very limited resources available for creating a mobile app. Through my leadership, Civic Media now offers its users a way to stay connected to its radio content.
Strategy
The mobile app provided the network with a channel with a stable, recognizable audience that can be reached with strategic messaging via push notifications. It also provides listeners with direct communication with hosts while their on air via text message or phone call.
Innovation
One of the most innovative elements of the entire design proved to be the ability for listeners to text their favorite station. The network began using the text feature for on-air "text to win" promotions that proved incredibly engaging and strengthened this particular channel.
Value
It is obvious that a mobile app brings with it an innate value because it is a direct connection to a user's personal device. What's not so obvious is how to break through the clutter of apps out there. Nurturing the connection over time with features that are useful and feel like a natural extension of a user's desired experience builds upon that value, which is why the "text to win" campaigns facilitated by the app proved so popular.
