The Fluyo wallet supported a pilot program for a cross-border payment system that enabled migrants in the U.S. to send money to their families in a small town in Guatemala. The recipients could then cash out their crypto using one of the CryptoATMs installed in the town. This idea came about from studying the phenomenon of diaspora financing, where migrant groups fund initiatives at many levels in their home countries while earning money in their host countries. The goal with using a direct money transfer with crypto was to enable them to pay less fees, circumvent rampant inflation in the destination country's fiat currency and have a safe, convenient digital means to store their currency.
Winner of the Best Business Idea at the Volcano innovation Summit in Antigua Guatemala in 2018. Among the most notable achievements with this project were bringing the first ever cryptocurrency ATMs to the country (exchanges powered by Coinbase) and designing a crypto wallet demo to help introduce the concept to people in the country.
The flow in the demo shows an exchange from fiat (GTQ) to crypto (BitcoinCash).
